tion from traditional to contemporary.

Though very much leaning toward contemporary in design,  the examples pic-
tured below retain a semblance of traditional elements. The unique stone and stucco fireplace below, left, evokes the ubiquitous Kiva designs of the Ameri-
can desert southwest.    Below,  right, the arched firebox framed with dimen-
sional stone and a prominent keystone lend a traditional hint to an  otherwise contemporary design.

The unique freestanding contemporary fireplace pictured below  is  made  pri-
marily of split-faced fieldstone.    In the close-up below,  right, smooth stone pillars and hearthstones present a striking contrast in texture,  color  and fin-
ish.

The following two contemporary stone fireplace designs,  though  very differ-
ent from one another,  are extremely distinctive in their own right.   The twin stone fireplaces pictured directly below  --  though striking in  and  of  them-
selves  --  are  designed  to  complement,  rather  than  detract  from,   the  room's focal point . . . . . the striking contemporary window design.

Conversely, the contemporary stone fireplace that follows is clearly designed to be the focal point of this room.  Crafted to resemble an elaborate outdoor fire pit,  its  positioning  and contrasting stone types,  textures  and  finishes leave no doubt as to which architectural element takes center stage  in  this relaxed, yet refined setting.

Similarly, the unique and highly unusual -- albeit striking -- stone hearth de-
sign pictured below is the center of attention in this casual  and  contempo-
rary outdoor room.
